This evening we went to the George & Dragon in Thames Ditton to see the John Barnes quartet, comprising John Barnes (baritone sax, alto sax, clarinet, bass clarinet, vocal), Alan Dandy (keyboard), Mick Durelle (bass guitar) and Don Cook (drums). The picture shows John playing his bass clarinet, producing a lovely rich tone in the lower register. Our favourite numbers were:
1) My request from last week, played by Alan and Mick, It's A Raggy Waltz, composed in by Dave Brubeck, this link being to our record 'Dave Brubeck's Greatest Hits'.
2) Bass clarinet feature My Foolish Heart, composed in 1949 by Victor Young with lyrics by Ned Washington. The link is to the Stan Getz version.
3) Alan Dandy's solo feature Alaskan Rag, composed by Joseph Lamb and played on this link by Jazzou Jones.
4) Bass clarinet feature Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered, from the 1940 Rodgers and Hart musical Pal Joey. The link is to the Stacey Kent vocal.
John Lang (trombone) joined the band for 'It's Alright By Me' and 'Ring Dem Bells'.
