This evening we went to the George & Dragon in Thames Ditton to see the John Barnes quartet, comprising John Barnes (baritone sax, alto sax, clarinet), Alan Dandy (keyboard), Mick Durelle (string bass) and Dick Esmond (drums, pictured). Our favourite numbers were:
How Deep is the Ocean from the 1932 Irving Berlin musical 'Face The Music' and sung on this link by Brenda Lee, the 'Little Miss Dynamite' of my teenage years;
All I Do is dream of You, composed by Nacio Herb Brown with lyrics by Arthur Freed for the 1934 musical 'Sadie McKee' and sung on this link by Sarah Vaughan;
Alan Dandy's trio feature Triste, (AKA Tristy) composed by Antonio Carlos (Tom) Jobim and played on this link by Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd;
Blue Moon composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Lorenz Hart for the 1933 musical comedy film 'Hallelujah I'm a Bum' and sung on this link by Billie Holiday.
Guests were:
Alan Berry (keyboard) for 'I Never Knew' and joined by Kim Martine for 'I Remember April' and 'It's All Over';
John Lang (trombone) for 'Just Me, Just You' and 'Ring Dem Bells.
