Magna Jazz Band with Tony Pyke

On Thursday evening we went to the Berrylands Hotel in Surbiton, where Brian White's Magna jazz band performs every week. Brian White was absent so Tony Pyke (pictured with Geoff Cole's Hot Five at the Rutland arms) took his place on Alto Sax and Clarinet. Denny Ilett was due to play cornet or trumpet but failed to materialise.
Our favourite numbers were:
Peter Winn's request Cheek to Cheek, written by Irving Berlin and first performed by Fred Astaire in the movie Top Hat (1935)as in this YouTube clip;
Far Away Blues, played on this clip by George Lewis but also sung by Bessie Smith;
I'll Never Be The Same, sung on this clip by Billie Holliday, accompanied by Lester Young and Teddy Wilson;
I Saw Stars, played here by Reinhardt / Grapelly and composed by Maurice Sigler, Al Goodhart & Al Hoffman in 1934;
Alan Dandy's wonderful solo feature Russian Rag, by George L Cobb, a 1918 ragtime parody of Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C-sharp minor, Op.3, No.2;
Tony Pyke's feature There will Never Be Another You, composed by Harry Warren with lyrics by Mack Gordon for the Twentieth Century Fox musical Iceland (1942) starring Sonja Henie.
