John Barnes Quartet with Alan Berry & Dave Richmond

This evening we went to the George & Dragon in Thames Ditton to see the John Barnes quartet, comprising John Barnes (baritone sax, alto sax, clarinet and vocals), Alan Berry (keyboard, pictured), Dave Richmond (string bass, pictured) and Don Cook (drums). We had not seen Dave Richmond before and were impressed with the way he plays 'with the band' rather than just doing his own thing, and produces imaginative solos that are still related to the main theme.
The numbers we enjoyed most were:
That Old Feeling, composed by Sammy Fain with lyrics by Lew Brown, published in 1937;
Perdido, composed by valve trombonist Juan Tizol, then (1941) with Duke Ellington.
Sitters-in were John Shepherd (trumpet), John Lang (trombone) and Mark Aston (new tenor sax, played superbly) on:
'Perdido', 'Keeping Out of Mischief Now' and 'Ring Dem Bells'.
The audience was small, most of the drinkers clustering around TV screens to watch Chelsea beat Barcelona 4-2. One of the minority in the jazz area told Selina that he enjoyed our dancing. He might be in the minority even there !
