This evening we went to the Berrylands Hotel in Surbiton, where Brian White's Magna jazz band is resident. There was just one dep.; John China (keyboard, pictured from archive) who, in addition to being a fine pianist, has a great jazz voice. He sang three numbers of which the best was I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter by Fred E. Ahlert with lyrics by Joe Young.
John's keyboard feature was These Foolish Things by Jack Strachey in collaboration with Eric Maschwitz (using the pen name Holt Marvell) and Harry Link.
When the full band played For Me And My Gal Brian told us that it was written after the musical of that name, although he did not know the name of the composer. Wikipedia gives 1942 as the year of the Judy Garland-Gene Kelly musical directed by Busby Berkeley and 1917 as the year of the popular standard song by George W. Meyer, Edgar Leslie, and E. Ray Goetz.
