Karen Sharp Quartet at the George & Dragon

This evening we went to the George & Dragon in Thames Ditton. As we arrived, an irregular at the G&D said we were much missed at the Cricketers; our dancing having been the highlight of the evening there.

The band comprised Karen Sharp (tenor sax and clarinet, pictured), Alan Berry (keyboard), Mick Durelle (string bass) and Don Cook (drums). Karen certainly dominated the band, with no arguing about the number to be played or which key. Before the break, they played 8 numbers instead of the usual 5.
The numbers we enjoyed most were:
My Old Flame by Arthur Johnston with words by Sam Coslow and introduced by Mae West with Duke Ellington and His Orchestra in the 1934 film Belle of the Nineties;
Don't Get Around Much Anymore by Duke Ellington, originally titled 'Never No Lament', first recorded by Ellington in 1940 as a big band instrumental with lyrics and new title added by Bob Russell 1942.

Guests were John Shepherd and John Lang who started with 'Lady be Good' after which we left early, with one of the band calling out "He's on a promise".
